EQUINE OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathy is a system of physical therapy that lays emphasis on any imbalances or restrictions in function of the bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments, collectively known as the musculoskeletal system. When the musculoskeletal system is working correctly, there should be no pain or restricted movement in its tissues.

This principle is also true for animals as their bodies work in a similar way to ours. They too can suffer with back, joint, muscle and ligament problems that benefit from treatment using our gentle techniques. All horses can be treated, especially those who work hard or are frequently competing.

When horses have pain, we can find it easy to miss the subtle changes in the horse’s behaviour or body posture that highlight the issue to us. By combining our understanding of equine behaviour and body posture, along with an understanding of how your horse’s tack fits and our knowledge of how your horse’s body moves, we can effectively identify problem areas and help you get your equine friend feeling good again. We work closely alongside many farriers, saddle fitters, vets, and other professionals to ensure your horse has the best treatment possible.

Our equine osteopath, Georgina, has always had a keen interest in how osteopathy can help the well-being and performance of our equine friends and has developed her techniques over many years of continuous training to treat horses, as well as their riders.

The ability to work with both horse and rider allows us to work closely with their individual biomechanics and correct imbalances, creating harmony between the partnership and improving performance. Osteopathy has proven particularly helpful for improving the following:-

  • Reduced performance both competitively and at home.
  • Gait problems such as not tracking-up/dragging a toe.
  • Stiffness in different areas of the body or “cold backed” symptoms, dipping away from mounting, walking off from mounting or grumpy behaviour whilst being tacked up.
  • Reluctance to work on certain reins or transition problems such as bunny hopping or disunited strides.
  • Problems with head carriage such as head shaking, head tilting or neck resistance.
  • Sudden changes in behaviour such as bucking, rearing, kicking, and bolting.
  • Objections to being tacked up, refusal of the bit, “girthy” behaviours.
  • Maintaining mobility in older horses.
  • Aiding uneven muscle bulk and imbalances, postural issues, and thoracic sling problems.
  • Aiding rehabilitation after injury or specific diagnosed conditions.

The list is non exhaustive, and should you require any further information, please contact us directly where we would be happy to discuss your individual needs. We work throughout Northamptonshire, North Bedfordshire and west Cambridgeshire regularly.
